Resumo

This article argues that Main Character Syndrome in the workplace occurs when employees or leaders interpret organizational life primarily through their own importance, visibility, grievances, and desire for recognition. Evidence of this pattern can appear through exaggerated claims of success, inflated job roles, credit-hoarding, performative prosperity on social media, refusal to apologize, and the tendency to recast accountability as victimization. These behaviors matter because they shift attention away from shared responsibility and toward personal image management. When workplace identity becomes organized around admiration, employees may treat colleagues as supporting characters, minimize team contributions, dramatize ordinary conflict, and resist correction. The consequences can be serious: damaged trust, weakened psychological safety, distorted performance evaluation, reduced accountability, and unethical leadership behavior. However, the concept should not be confused with healthy confidence or professional ambition. The problem is not seeking recognition, but seeking recognition without truth, humility, or proportion. Therefore, Main Character Syndrome offers a practical way to understand how self-presentation, digital identity, and ego-driven behavior can undermine ethical workplace relationships and organizational integrity. The novelty of this article is that it moves Main Character Syndrome beyond popular culture and social media commentary into the serious study of workplace behavior, leadership ethics, and organizational psychology. Its uniqueness is that it connects exaggerated professional identity, digital self-presentation, credit-hoarding, accountability avoidance, and performative prosperity as part of one workplace pattern. The article is also distinctive because it treats Main Character Syndrome not simply as vanity or confidence, but as a cyber-psychological and organizational concern with real consequences for trust, psychological safety, performance evaluation, and ethical leadership. Its key contribution is showing that honest, realistic self-awareness is a practical corrective to ego-driven workplace behavior.
