Resumo

Digital transformation has emerged as a critical enabler of structural modernization in the transportation and logistics sector, particularly within emerging economies characterized by complex supply chains and infrastructural heterogeneity. This conceptual study examines the impact of digital technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), automation, artificial intelligence, and blockchain on dexterity, explicability, and sustainability in modernizing India’s logistics ecosystem.

Drawing upon secondary data, policy documents, and recent empirical evidence, the study evaluates how digital tools contribute to improved decision-making, predictive logistics planning, and seamless coordination among multiple stakeholders. It also identifies India-specific structural and institutional, including fragmented logistics networks, uneven digital infrastructure, skill shortage, and regulatory complexities that arrest pace and depth of digital transformation. In parallel, the paper analyses the role of government-led initiatives like the National Logistics Policy (NLP), PM Gati Shakti, and Digital India, in fostering an enabling ecosystem for technology-driven logistics modernization.

The findings highlight that while digital transformation offers substantial efficiency and sustainability gains, its implementation challenges remain unevenly distributed across firm sizes and regions, particularly among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and rural corridors. The study concludes by proposing strategic policy and managerial interventions to accelerate inclusive digital adoption and outlines promising avenues for future research, particularly in the areas of technology-enabled sustainability, resilience, and integrated logistics governance in India’s evolving digital economies.
