This article aims to reflect on the practice of teaching and learning the guitar, based on a theoretical framework and a questionnaire applied online to guitarists who perform in the city of João Pessoa/PB. We come up with the definition of instrumental technique from the theoretical point of view of the musical performance and from the point of view of the guitarists. Based on this information, we raise a number of questions for future research. Realizing that the teaching of the guitar will be what we, guitarists, agents of the process, make of it, it is highly important to constantly reflect on the teaching and learning practices we favor. To sum up, we perceive it is essential to know and master the instrumental techniques, especially to meet the individuals’ wishes to play and express themselves in certain musical styles. In other words, the instrumental technique should allow the guitarist to articulate his ideas with efficiency and clarity, but first he must have something to "say" musically.
