Corrosion poses economic and operational challenges in industries like petrochemicals, driving a shift from toxic synthetic inhibitors to ecofriendly alternatives. This study investigates a green corrosion inhibitor derived from pineapple peel (Ananas comosus). The extract was obtained via Soxhlet extraction with ethanol for 1.5 hours and concentrated by rotary evaporation. Its anti-corrosive efficacy on ASTM 1020 carbon steel was evaluated in a 1 mol L⁻¹ HCl solution at 25 °C using weight loss assays, Potentiodynamic Polarization, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Gravimetric tests over 24 hours showed that 2 to 6 g L⁻¹ of extract achieved an inhibition efficiency exceeding 95%, reducing the corrosion rate below 0.5 mm/year. Multi-temporal assays (8–60 hours) confirmed film stabilization, peaking at 48 hours. Electrochemical polarization data revealed a significant reduction in current densities, classifying the extract as a mixed-type inhibitor with predominant cathodic control, shifting the corrosion potential within a ±85 mV range. EIS data displayed a single capacitive loop, indicating a charge transfer-controlled process. With optimization, charge transfer resistance () increased from 18.05 to 202.05 cm², while double-layer capacitance () decreased from 92.22 to 41.65 F cm⁻², confirming water molecule displacement and organic adsorption at the metal/solution interface. This performance is attributed to phenolic compounds (gallic and caffeic acids), whose aromatic rings and oxygen heteroatoms form coordination bonds with iron d-orbitals. This creates a hydrophobic barrier and provides antioxidant protection, making this agricultural byproduct an efficient, low-cost, and sustainable asset protection option.
