Abstract

Due to its advantageous characteristics as a laboratory animal, the fish Danio rerio, zebrafish, has been widely used in scientific research. For this reason, there is a need to study the impact of nutrition on its development in order to improve husbandry techniques in animal facilities, since it is well known that the effectiveness of a mating protocol determines the production of viable embryos, and nutrition plays a fundamental role in this process. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the reproductive performance of zebrafish fed with three different diets, as well as the development of embryos and larvae resulting from the matings. The feeding protocols provided were: Diet 1 – dry commercial fish food + brine shrimp; Diet 2 – dry fish food + dry fish food; and Diet 3 – dry fish food + supplemented feed + brine shrimp. The parameters assessed were fecundity, survival, hatching index, embryo and larvae growth, chorion and embryo size, and yolk sac area. The results showed that all three diets were effective in producing embryos in both quantity and quality within acceptable standards. However, Diet 3 stood out in most of the criteria analyzed, i.e., fecundity, survival, embryo size, and yolk sac area. There was no considerable difference in the embryo-larval growth, though. We understand that studies like this are important for guiding and improving husbandry, breeding, and reproduction protocols for zebrafish in animal facilities, and can support the development of scientific research that uses this species as an experimental model.
