Abstract

This study, in the form of a case report, aimed to document the use of active learning methodologies for teaching students about home visits during the postpartum period. Twenty students from Medicine and Nursing participated, currently in training for a research project on breastfeeding. During the study, four clinical cases were presented to encourage critical debate on challenges encountered in postpartum home visits. In these discussions, the students identified various health issues of the mother-infant dyad. The workshop coordinators then highlighted important aspects that the students had not noticed, leading to detailed training on observations, examinations, and necessary care during these visits. This report underscored the importance of workshops as an active learning methodology in training Medicine and Nursing students to conduct home visits in the postpartum period. Such an approach allowed students to apply and refine their practical and theoretical skills in real situations, facing complex and varied challenges inherent in-home care. Thus, the use of workshops proved to be an essential strategy, equipping students to provide high-quality healthcare, with sensitivity to the complexity and individuality of each home care case. This training model emerges as a vital component in the education of future health professionals, equipping them more efficiently for the practical challenges of home care during the postpartum period.
