Endophytic fungi have been isolated and identified, and some species have been described as biological control agents, and as bio-stimulants and bio-fertilizers. In this study we isolate endophytic fungi from Cynodon spp., a forage used to feed cattle in Brazil, and we evaluate the potential of isolates to inhibit the mycelial growth of phytopathogens as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Bipolaris sp., Fusarium verticillioides, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. A total of 22 endophytic fungi were isolated from the stems of healthy Cynodon plants. Based on phylogenetic analysis of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequences, the endophytic fungal isolates were identified as Sarocladium spinificis, S. kiliense, Neosetophoma poaceicola, N. xingrensis, Pyrenochaetopsis sp., and Epicoccum sp. This is the first report of N. poaceicola and N. xingrensis as endophytic fungi from Cynodon. Sarocladium spinificis was the most abundant endophyte, accounting for 40.9% of the total, and N. poaceicola was the second most abundant taxon (36.36%). S. spinificis reduced the mycelial growth of S. sclerotiorum, showing its biocontrol potential.
