Dentistry and well-being: the relationship between oral health and quality of life

Oral health plays a central role in overall health and quality of life, influencing not only functional abilities but also psychological and social well-being. Poor oral health conditions, such as caries, periodontal disease, tooth loss, and orofacial pain, are associated with physical limitations, impaired aesthetics, and reduced self-esteem. These conditions compromise essential daily activities including eating, speaking, and smiling, often leading to social withdrawal and diminished quality of life. Evidence demonstrates that oral rehabilitation and preventive care significantly improve both functional outcomes and psychosocial well-being, reinforcing the importance of dentistry beyond disease prevention. Moreover, socioeconomic disparities strongly determine access to care and the prevalence of oral diseases, perpetuating inequalities in well-being. Oral health is also closely linked to systemic health, with associations to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cognitive decline. The integration of oral health into broader public health policies and clinical strategies is therefore essential to promote equity, enhance well-being, and reduce the global burden of oral diseases. This article highlights the complex interplay between oral health, self-esteem, and overall quality of life, underscoring the role of dentistry as a critical component of holistic health promotion.
