Adapted physical education (APE) programs provide a holistic approach to promoting mental health and social autonomy in older adults. As depression and anxiety are prevalent in aging populations and are often exacerbated by social isolation, interventions that integrate physical activity with social engagement are particularly valuable. Evidence from randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, and longitudinal research demonstrates that group-based APE programs, including low-impact aerobic exercises, coordination tasks, and resistance training, reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms while enhancing social interaction, self-efficacy, and overall quality of life. Adaptations for individuals with mobility limitations, such as chair-based exercises and low-impact routines, ensure safety and accessibility. By combining physical, cognitive, and social stimulation, APE interventions foster psychological resilience and community participation, making them a critical strategy for improving mental well-being and autonomy among older adults.
