Abstract

The Venice Charter's achievements began with the definition of "monument" and expanded to today's definition of "cultural heritage." The charter expressed the feasibility of international theory and practice on monument conservation and can be interpreted as having presented intervention measures for preserving various monuments. In addition, since the Venice Charter, charters, principles, and guidelines on numerous cultural heritage categories have been adopted through ICOMOS based on its spirit. The validity of the Venice Charter is increasingly confirmed over time, and the ICOMOS Guidelines on Fortifications and Military Heritage, adopted through ICOMOS in 2021, are no exception. This study aims to analyse the current application and implications of the Venice Charter's monument interventions, such as conservation, restoration, reconstruction, maintenance, use, consolidation, and replacement, in terms of 'Fortifications and military heritage'.
