Wood is a renewable resource of great significance due to its versatility as a raw material. It plays a vital role in numerous applications, including the visual arts, where it is often used to create sculptures associated with religious contexts. Anatomical identification of the wood used in sacred sculptures can offer valuable insights into their historical, geographical, and artistic backgrounds, while also informing conservation and restoration practices. In this study, a microscopic anatomical analysis was carried out on wood samples collected from the base and interior of the shoe of a sculpture representing Saint Barbara, held in the collection of the Catedral Metropolitana de Pelotas [Metropolitan Cathedral of Pelotas], Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The samples were prepared using classical histological techniques in specialised laboratories at the Universidade Federal de Pelotas [Federal University of Pelotas]. The analysis revealed that both samples were anatomically similar and belong to the genus Cedrela (Meliaceae), consistent with the Brazilian native species C. fissilis or C. odorata. Although some publications associate historical sculptures carved in Brazilian cedar primarily with C. fissilis, our observations indicate a substantial overlap in both qualitative and quantitative anatomical features between the two species, preventing a reliable taxonomic distinction. The identification was based on diagnostic elements such as the presence of marginal parenchyma and semi-ring-porous growth rings, supporting the traditional use of Brazilian cedar wood as a preferred material for sacred sculpture in Brazil.
