Abstract

This study investigates the enhancement of soft clay soil properties for construction by stabilizing it using a combination of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and Residium Cracking Catalyst 15 (RCC 15). Soft soils, prevalent in coastal and swampy regions, exhibit high compressibility and poor stability, causing construction challenges. EPS is a lightweight material with a closed pore structure that reduces soil weight, while RCC 15, an industrial waste containing alumina and silica, acts as a binder to increase soil shear strength and friction angle. Samples with 0.4% EPS and varying RCC 15 contents (20%, 25%, and 30%) were tested for moisture content, specific gravity, Atterberg limits, compation and triaxial test to analyze improvements in physical properties. Result of testing showed that the optimum RCC 15 addition was 25%, resulting in a maximum dry density increase of 15.93%, a reduction in optimum moisture content by 26.11%, and a friction angle increase of 105.26% compared to the original soil. These results demonstrate that combining 0.4% EPS with 25% RCC 15 significantly improves soil strength and stability. This sustainable and cost-effective method also helps reduce environmental waste, providing a viable solution for construction on soft clay. Results indicate that the combined use of EPS and RCC 15 effectively improves soil stability and strength, offering a sustainable and cost-efficient soil stabilization method. Furthermore, the utilization of RCC 15 as a waste product contributes to environmental waste reduction. This approach holds promise for enhancing construction feasibility on soft clay soils.
