Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common herpesvirus that causes congenital infections with significant neonatal health risks. This study characterized CMV glycoprotein B (gB) genotypes among 2,595 newborns in Southern Bahia, Brazil. CMV DNA was detected in 1.19% of cases, with gB1, gB2, and gB3 identified among the infected infants (gB2 and gB1 being the most prevalent). Although follow-up evaluations showed no statistically significant correlation between genotypes and late sequelae, three infants exhibited hearing loss. These findings highlight the predominance of gB1 and gB2 in the studied region, emphasizing the need for targeted prevention and management strategies.
