Abstract

Introduction: Descendants of preeclamptic pregnancies have less body weight at birth; however, vascular function of hypertension-in-pregnancy-induced offspring weight loss is still unclear. Aims: Evaluate the impact of hypertensive pregnancy on cardiovascular system of first-generation male offspring rats focusing the nitric oxide (NO) pathway. Main methods: male rats, divided into 2 groups (n = 6 per group), group 1 offspring of normotensive mothers and group 2 offspring of hypertensive mothers. After birth, offspring were weighed, and blood pressure was measured. In adulthood, offspring were euthanized to perform vascular reactivity experiments, and metabolites of NO were examined in plasma. Key findings: Offspring of hypertensive mothers showed significant decreases in body weight on days 10 and 21 (P <0.05), while no significant differences were found in adult weight. Blood pressure of the offspring showed normal values in adulthood, and no significant changes were found on vascular function. Also, the metabolites of NO presented no statistical differences. Significance: The present results suggest that although reduced infant body weight gain were found, there may be physiological compensations throughout the development of the cardiovascular system of the offspring, since no differences were found in blood pressure parameters, NO and weight gains at 60 and 90 days of life of the offspring of hypertensive mothers.
