Resumo

The Amazon Basin is home to the greatest freshwater biodiversity on the planet, and the Madeira River stands out as one of its major tributaries. The commissioning of the Santo Antônio and Jirau hydroelectric dams in the middle section of the river in 2012 has generated environmental and socioeconomic impacts that remain insufficiently understood, particularly with respect to migratory fish species and regional artisanal fisheries. In this context, the objective of the present study was to characterize landings of Characiformes in the municipality of Humaitá, Amazonas State (Brazil), from 2002 to 2019, based on records obtained from the local port. Data were grouped into two periods: before (2002–2011) and after (2012–2019) the installation of the hydroelectric dams. Comparison between periods revealed an approximately 50% reduction in total landed volume, indicating a substantial temporal decline in catches of this order. These findings suggest that the hydroelectric projects may have contributed to decreased fishing productivity in the region. We conclude that increased investment in fisheries research and monitoring is essential to support sustainable fisheries management strategies and to reinforce the food and economic security of Amazonian communities that depend on this activity.
