Resumo

Vertebrates are generally crucial for the primary dispersal of many plant species. However, invertebrates, such as leafcutter ants, can be crucial secondary seed dispersers. The species H. glandulosa and B. tomentosa are trees with a wide distribution in Brazil and have significant economic and ecological importance. This work aimed to study the interactions between the leafcutter ant species A. sexdens (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and the tree species H. glandulosa and B. tomentosa in Gurupi in the southern Tocantins. Seeds were collected in fragments of cerrado sensu stricto to evaluate the influence of the ant on the germination of these species, observing interactions between the leafcutter ant and the seeds of the two tree species. Germination tests were carried out on seeds cleaned by no method (T1), cleaned manually (T2), and cleaned by A. sexdens workers (T3). For each treatment, germination percentage and germination speed index (GSI) were evaluated. The tests showed that A. sexdens carried out secondary dispersal of the two tree species. Removal of the seed pulp by the ants increased the germination percentage and germination velocity index of both species.
