The presence of crop residues and cover crops improves the chemical, physical, and biological attributes of the soil, contributing to the reduction of erosion, nutrient losses, diseases, and weeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate different autumn–winter grasses to identify promising genotypes for soil cover and lines with potential for release as cultivars. The experiment was conducted at IRDeR, in Augusto Pestana, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, using a randomized complete block design with 33 treatments and four blocks. Different genotypes of autumn–winter grasses were evaluated, including black oats (IPR Cabocla, UPFA 21 – Moreninha, IAPAR 61, BRS Pampeana, Embrapa 139, BRS Tropeira, Alpha 1719, UPF F2008/3-7-1, UPF F2008/10-1-3, UPF F2008/2-1-3, and IDR 18GUACP), white oats (IPR Esmeralda, UPFA Aguerrida, IPR 126, IPR Suprema, UPF D1-3AP, Alpha 16116, AGROURS Invernada, URS F Flete, URS Taura, Alpha 16109, Alpha 16113, UFRGS 16Q 6020-1, UFRGS 16Q 6003-2, UFRGS 16Q 6005-2, SI-STO14-CPO, and SI-STO14-A2), wheat (TBIO Lenox, BRS Tarumã, and BRS Tarumaxi), ryegrass (BRS Integração), rye (BRS Progresso), and triticale (BRS Saturno). The variables evaluated were total dry matter production (TDM, kg ha⁻¹), plant height (PH), and days from emergence to panicle/spike appearance (DEPSA). Data were subjected to analysis of variance and mean comparison test. The genotypes Alpha 16113, AGROURS Invernada, Alpha 16109, and IDR 18GUACP showed the highest TDM. For plant height, AGROURS Invernada, IPR Suprema, and Alpha 1719 stood out. IPR Suprema presented the longest cycle.
