Shifting cultivation combines conversion, cultivation and vegetated fallow, but the mechanisms by which fallow maintains soil fertility vary among local systems. This study evaluated the soil-fertility dynamics of a quilombola shifting cultivation system in the Atlantic Forest of the Ribeira Valley, São Paulo, Brazil, and estimated the fallow interval most consistent with ecological stability. A synchronic control-impact design compared 20 areas distributed among five fallow-age classes (0–5, 10–15, 20–25, 30 and 55–60 years) and mature-forest controls (>150 years). Soil samples were collected at 0–1, 1–5 and 5–10 cm and analyzed for acidity, macronutrients, exchange properties, organic matter and texture; class means were evaluated with a general linear model and Tukey comparisons. Fallow age was strongly correlated with estimated biomass (r = 0.897; p < 0.001). Relative fertility increased in intermediate fallows, especially between 10 and 25 years, and then declined toward the acidic, low-base-saturation condition of mature-forest soils. Mature forests retained higher organic matter, phosphorus and cation-exchange capacity. Because approximately 60–80% of epigeal biomass remained unburned, its slow decomposition acted as mulch and maintained nutrients within the soil–vegetation complex. The system is therefore interpreted as a Mulch-Slash-Burn variant. Under the studied conditions, a 30–55-year fallow is the most suitable interval for restoring soil properties and conserving nutrient stocks.
