The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of using a natural source of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 glucoside (1,25(OH)2D3) in sows on their reproductive performance in two production environments: under controlled temperature (at an average of 21.8 ± 2 °C) and under heat stress (at an average temperature of 28.6 ± 4 °C). In total, 104 DB90 sows were randomly distributed to two groups: the treatment group (1,25(OH)2D3) and control group. Regarding the environment, only the lactation period was evaluated, with 52 sows in each environmental group and further subgrouping of 26 sows into each treatment group. Sows in the 1,25(OH)2D3 group (n = 52) received 3.5 µg/ day of 1,25(OH)2D3 on top via feed beginning in the final trimester of gestation, and 7 µg/day of 1,25(OH)2D3 on top via feed throughout the lactation phase. The duration of total farrowing, use of oxytocin, dystocia, total births, live births, mummification, stillbirths, birthweight below 900 g, birthweight, weight after 24 h birth, colostrum ingestion and production, weight at weaning, weight gain from birth to weaning, and frequency of litter diarrhoea were evaluated. There was no interaction between the use of 1,25(OH)2D3 glycoside and the environment. The farrowing time of the 1,25(OH)2D3 group was 94 minutes shorter than the control group. The production of colostrum was 16.29% higher for sows that ingested 1,25(OH)2D3, as was the ingestion of colostrum by the litter of this group, the daily weight gain (DWG) of the piglets at 24 hours, and the weight gain at weaning (336 g, 124 g and 236 g, respectively). The incidence of dystocia and the use of oxytocin were lower in sows that received 1,25(OH)2D3 and in those housed in a temperature-controlled environment. Additionally, they tended have a higher weight at weaning (5.97 kg). The supply of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 glycoside to sows improves the reproductive outcomes of sows and progeny.
