Resumo

The current retrospective study determined the frequency, association of epidemiological variables and post-mortem pathological diagnosis of disease in dogs without reported neurological signs. The study included 45 cases that were remitted to the pathology department at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at Autonomous University of Nuevo León in Mexico from 2012 to 2022, all corresponding to natural deaths. Injuries in the nervous system were identified in 100% of the cases: 97.8% corresponded to Central Nervous System (CNS) and 2.2% to Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). Inflammatory and/or infectious disorders were the most common (35.6%) with canine distemper virus and parvovirus being the most common agents. Most of the patients were male (57.8%) and under one-year of age (40.0%). Breed group 9 (companion and toy dogs) of the International Cynologic Federation (FCI) was the most represented (22.2%), with Pomerania the most affected breed (11.1%). Most of the cases came from Nuevo León state (62.2%), mainly from the Monterrey city (24.5%), and the highest number of referrals occurred in winter (28.8%). Results showed association between age groups and type of diagnosis. This post-mortem analysis provides useful information to identify neurological injuries associated with diverse clinical diagnosis, highlighting the need to consider possible effects to the nervous system in cases diagnosed as non-neurological disease.
