Plant extracts have been tested with potentially positive effects on the performance and metabolism of hens, thus, the addition of black wattle extract in the diet of laying hens in an organic production system was evaluated in order to evaluate performance, quality of eggs, nutrient metabolism, and foot pad integrity through pododermatitis scores. Four levels of black wattle extract were added to the diet (0, 150, 300, and 450 mg/kg) and tested in 40 brown laying hens, 50 weeks old, for 28 days. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) regarding the different diets in the performance, egg quality, and nutrient metabolism responses. The hens that received 300 and 450 mg/kg of black wattle extract in the diet improved (P <0.05) their scores of pododermatitis injuries at the end of the experiment. Black wattle extract can be added to the diet of laying hens in an organic production system, without prejudice to performance, egg quality, and nutrient metabolism. The integrity of the foot pad of laying hens in an organic production system can be improved with the incorporation of black wattle extract in their diet.
