Resumo

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), mainly caused by the H5N1 subtype clade 2.3.4.4b, represents a continuous threat to global poultry farming, with significant economic and public health impacts. In Brazil, a leading poultry exporting country, commercial farms maintained a HPAI-free sanitary status until May 2025, when the first outbreak was confirmed in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul. This systematic review synthesizes epidemiological data from active and passive surveillance (2023-2026), detailing geographic occurrences in wild, domestic, and commercial birds; containment strategies based on the Contingency Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA); and analyses the effectiveness of these measures. 188 confirmed cases were identified up to June 2026, predominantly in wild birds in the South and Southeast regions. Measures such as sanitary culling, protection zones, active surveillance mainly in border areas, and rigorous biosecurity demonstrated high effectiveness in localized containment, preventing dissemination. Challenges include wild bird migration and human-animal interfaces. Future perspectives emphasize integrated genomic surveillance, a One Health approach, and interagency collaboration to mitigate emerging risks.
