Anthraquinones (AQs) are secondary metabolites found in species such as Senna alexandrina, Rheum palmatum, and Aloe vera, whose derivatives, including sennosides and aloin, exhibit relevant pharmacological properties, particularly in the treatment of constipation. This study aimed to review the literature on AQs, with emphasis on chrysazin, purpurin, and quinalizarin, using databases such as Google Scholar, SciELO, LILACS via the Virtual Health Library, PubMed, and the CAPES Periodicals Portal. Chrysazin exhibits antibacterial and antifungal activities, as well as effects in reducing atherosclerotic plaques and neurotoxicity; although withdrawn from the market due to its carcinogenic potential, studies suggest possible anticancer activity and a role in metabolic regulation. Purpurin demonstrates antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antimutagenic, and anticancer activities, in addition to neuroprotective and hepatoprotective effects. Quinalizarin stands out as a potent inhibitor of protein kinase CK2, also presenting antimicrobial, antiviral, and antitumor properties. Despite their therapeutic potential, clinical application remains limited, and further studies are required to confirm efficacy, safety, and long-term pharmacokinetic and toxicological profiles.
