Resumo

Cardiac neoplasms in dogs are uncommon but clinically significant conditions frequently associated with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade, resulting in severe haemodynamic compromise. This report describes the surgical management of an eight-year-old male French Bulldog (14 kg) presenting with severe dyspnoea secondary to pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. Diagnostic imaging revealed a heart base mass suggestive of neoplasia. After emergency stabilisation, the patient underwent left intercostal thoracotomy with pericardial decompression and excisional biopsy of the mass. Intraoperative findings were compatible with a heart base tumour consistent with chemodectoma. Postoperative management focused on multimodal analgesia and ventilatory support, highlighting the challenges associated with thoracic surgery in brachycephalic patients. Follow-up information indicated survival extending up to two years after surgical intervention with satisfactory quality of life. Open thoracotomy with excisional biopsy remains an important diagnostic and therapeutic option for selected cases of cardiac neoplasia in dogs.
