Resumo

To evaluate the effects of the inclusion of the natural pigments marigold (Tagetes erecta) and annatto (Bixa orellana L.) in the diet of Japanese laying quail on productive performance, egg quality and yolk color. A total of 252 quail were distributed in a completely randomized design with seven treatments and six replicates each. The diets were formulated with three levels of marigold (0.15%, 0.25% and 0.35%), three levels of annatto (1.50%, 2.50% and 3.50%) and one control. No significant differences were detected in the performance of the birds or in the internal or external quality of the eggs (P>0.05). However, treatments with relatively high levels of pigments promoted significant intensification of yolk color (P<0.05), with mean scores of up to 9 on the DSM scale. These results indicate that marigold and annatto can be used as effective natural alternatives to synthetic pigments in the formulation of quail diets, contributing to the production of eggs with increased commercial value.
