Objective: To evaluate patents that use nanotechnology as a strategy for the treatment of biofilms. Methods: A review of patents available in Espacenet from the European Patent Office and in the United States Patent and Trademark Office databases was conducted. The inclusion criteria were patents that mentioned the terms “nanomolecules,” “nanopharmaceuticals,” “nanocomposites,” or “nanocapsules” in combination with “biofilm” and “treatment”. Results: A total of 3,021 patents were screened, of which 2,565 were excluded because they were not relevant to this review. Among the remaining patents, 442 applied nanotechnology as a strategy for biofilm control; however, only 12 specifically addressed nanopharmaceutical formulations for the treatment of biofilms. Conclusion: Microbial biofilms play a crucial role in chronic and recurrent infections. Antibiotic treatment alone is often inadequate for the complete eradication of biofilm-associated infections, contributing to high recurrence rates and unsatisfactory clinical outcomes. This review highlights promising new drug candidates as potential strategies for the treatment of biofilm-associated infections.
