Palm wine consumption is widespread in Nigeria, and yet despite its high alcohol content, information on its physiological effects remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of palm wine on gonadotropin levels in female albino Wistar rats. A total of ten (10) female rats were used and randomly divided into two (02) groups of five (5) rats each. Group A served as the control group, while Group B was the experimental group that received 10 ml/kg of palm wine. The experimental protocol lasted 21 days, during which the animals were monitored for behavior, feeding patterns, physical activity, and overall well-being. At the end of the study, the animals were sacrificed, and blood samples were collected to analyze follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels. Student’s t-test was used to compare the mean values between groups, and a p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The results showed that palm wine significantly (p<0.05) increased serum FSH and LH levels in the treated group compared to the control. This study therefore, show that Palm wine consumption stimulates secretion of gonadotropins in female Wistar rats.
