Sexual dimorphism is widely reported in freshwater turtles and is often associated with differences in reproductive strategies and life-history traits. We investigated sexual dimorphism, biometric relationships, and sex ratio in a population of Phrynops geoffroanus inhabiting Lake São Francisco, located within the Environmental Protection Area of Baixada Maranhense, northeastern Amazonia, Brazil. A total of 113 individuals were captured, including 51 males, 49 females, and 13 juveniles. Sixteen morphometric variables and body mass were measured. Females exhibited significantly greater curved carapace length, plastron length, carapace width, and body mass, whereas males showed significantly longer and thicker tails. Linear regression analyses revealed positive and significant relationships between curved carapace length and all other morphometric variables for both sexes, with particularly strong associations between carapace and plastron dimensions. The sex ratio did not differ significantly from parity (1.04:1, males:females), suggesting demographic stability in this protected population. The observed pattern of female-biased body size dimorphism and male-biased tail development is consistent with reproductive investment and mating-related morphological differentiation reported for freshwater turtles. These findings provide baseline biometric data for a protected Amazonian floodplain population and contribute to the understanding of morphological variation and population structure in P. geoffroanus.
