Resumo

The chloride content is a chemical test performed on ruminal fluid that assists in the clincal evaluation of affected ruminants by gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of this work was to measure the chlorides in sheep under progressive feed restriction, mimicking the anorexia that occurs during gastrointestinal illnesses. Five healthy sheep were used, kept in individual pens, fed with tifton grass hay, concentrate containing mineral salt, and water ad libitum. The animals were subjected to a progressive daily solid food restriction of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Physical and ruminal fluid analyses were performed on the animals. Chlorides were measured in the ruminal fluid, blood, and saliva. The chloride concentration in the ruminal fluid decreased significantly (p<0.01), as did some physical examination parameters such as ruminal waves (p<0.01), heart rate (p<0.01), and rectal temperature (p<0.01). The ruminal fluid had its pH increased (p<0.03), in addition to significant deleterious changes in motility, density, percentage, and predominance of infusoria (p<0.01). The reduction time of methylene blue increased (p<0.01) and the total protozoa count decreased (p<0.03). Hyporexia and anorexia in healthy sheep cause a reduction in the chloride content of the ruminal fluid, which allows the evaluation of fluctuations of these ions in sick animals through paired measurements.
