Resumo

Teeth are the organs that best record the passage of time, presenting unique characteristics such as late root formation, prolonged growth, and continuous eruption. By analyzing the dental occlusal surfaces, it is possible to estimate the age of horses. The objective of this study was to create an Equine Age Estimation Simulator (EAES), highlighting its anatomical characteristics and reproducing age-related morphological variations. The study was conducted in three stages: (1) creation of biscuit (cold porcelain) simulators representing the horse’s incisor teeth and their progressive wear; (2) digitization of the biscuit models; and (3) 3D printing and finishing of the EAES. The EAES accurately reproduced the main dental features used in age estimation, including the infundibulum, dental star, Galvayne’s groove, and dental pulp. The models also reflected morphological changes across different ages, such as the transition from rectangular to trapezoidal and triangular occlusal shapes, the disappearance of the infundibulum, and the progressive visibility of the dental star and pulp chamber. A total of 41.1 hours were required to create and print all EAES models, consuming 176.4 grams of ABS filament at a total cost of US$ 4.72. The EAES proved to be an important low-cost educational tool, with the potential to enhance the training of veterinary medicine students in equine dentistry.
