Oral neoplasms are rarely described in wild animals, especially in perissodactyls such as Tapirus terrestris, making each clinical record a relevant contribution to veterinary medicine and comparative surgery. This study describes the clinical and surgical management of an adult female Tapirus terrestris (15 years old, ~300 kg) from Bosque dos Jequitibás, Campinas-SP, presenting a rapidly growing rostral mass in the region of the upper right canine, consistent with oral neoplasia.
Radiographic examinations showed osteolysis of the right maxilla, and, given the rostral location and absence of orbital involvement, a partial rostral maxillectomy with oncological margins was performed. The procedure was performed under balanced general anesthesia and continuous intravenous anesthetic infusions, associated with infraorbital block. After circumferential elliptical incision and diagonal osteotomy, the lesion was completely excised, with hemostasis by compression and laser cauterization. Closure was performed with an inverted L-shaped mucogingival flap and absorbable suture (3-0 polydioxanone), followed by laser therapy for analgesia and healing stimulation.
The postoperative period proceeded without significant complications, and the patient recovered well, resuming spontaneous feeding within a few days. Months after surgery, the animal died from causes unrelated to the procedure.
The case demonstrates the feasibility and safety of partial rostral maxillectomy in Tapirus terrestris, highlighting the anatomical and anesthetic challenges inherent to the species, as well as the importance of early diagnosis and systematic case reporting for the advancement of oncology in wild animals.
