Precision Agriculture in Banana Cultivation: Adoption Patterns, Barriers, and Pathways for Sustainable Innovation in Ecuador

This study uses multivariate techniques to assess how banana growers in Valencia canton, Ecuador, integrate agricultural machinery and precision-farming tools into their production systems. A quantitative, descriptive design combined structured surveys, semi-structured interviews and field observations, targeting fifty randomly selected farmers. Exploratory Factor Analysis, Principal Component Analysis and K-means clustering uncovered technological-adoption patterns and classified growers by implementation level.
Findings reveal uneven uptake of climate sensors, automated irrigation, satellite guidance and decision-support platforms. Training availability, infrastructure and credit access are the main determinants. Higher technological integration correlates positively with yield increases, lower operating costs, and improved environmental performance especially water-use efficiency and reduced indirect emissions. Membership in farmer associations and sustained participation in extension programmes act as key innovation accelerators.
These results provide empirical foundations for tiered public policies and advisory strategies aimed at bridging technological gaps and enhancing the competitiveness and resilience of banana production. The multivariate approach offers a transferable roadmap for other tropical fruit systems, while heat-map and biplot visualizations give stakeholders intuitive insights into synergies and bottlenecks, supporting evidence-based decision-making and targeted investment.
