Animal welfare during livestock transport has become an increasingly important issue in veterinary medicine, particularly in the context of international trade and compliance with global standards. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate animal welfare during cattle transport to the FEGOSA livestock market in Puerto Montt, Chile, and to assess transporters’ perceptions regarding animal welfare regulations. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted between March and May 2018 at the FEGOSA livestock market. Animal welfare indicators were assessed according to Chilean Law No. 20.380. A total of 80 trucks transporting 528 head of cattle were evaluated, and transporters were surveyed about their perceptions of animal welfare standards. Descriptive statistics were obtained using SPSS version 20. Results: Most trucks originated from the province of Llanquihue (82.5%), followed by Chiloé (11.3%), Osorno (5%), and Punta Arenas (1.3%). The majority of transporters had approximately 20 years of experience. When cows and calves were transported together, stocking densities reached 668 kg/m², exceeding the permitted limit. Stocking density showed a normal distribution across categories, and no significant differences were observed (p > 0.05). Most trips lasted under 200 minutes. Ninety percent of trucks used appropriate handling equipment, while 10% used electric prods, sticks, or kicks. Only one truck transported animals with traumatic injuries, and 94% did not report fallen animals during transport. Conclusions: Most animals arrived at the market in compliance with animal welfare standards, indicating that transport conditions generally ensure acceptable welfare levels. Transporters are increasingly aware of animal welfare, as reflected by their participation in training programs and low rates of animal injuries or collapse during transport.
