This experiment evaluated fertility at parturition of Saanen goats in seasonal anestrus following estrous synchronization with a short-term progestagen treatment combined with equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) or estradiol benzoate (EB). Non-lactating Saanen goats (n=30) in seasonal anestrus were distributed into two treatments. On day zero (D₀), all goats received half of a norgestomet implant (1.5 mg) placed subcutaneously on the dorsal ear surface, maintained for five days. Goats in the eCG group (n=15) received 250 IU injection at implant removal (D₅), while those in the EB group (n=15) received 0.5 mg injection 24 hours after implant removal (D₆). Estrous behavior was monitored at 4-hour intervals from 12 to 96 hours post-implant removal. Goats displaying estrous signs were artificially inseminated twice (at 12 and 24 hours after estrous onset) with fresh semen diluted in coconut water extender. Ovulation was estimated based on serum progesterone on day 5 after estrus. Estrous induction was similar between treatments (80.0% vs 93.3% for eCG and EB, respectively; P>0.05). Time to estrus after implant removal was shorter with eCG treatment (24.3±1.7 h vs 31.4±1.2 h; P<0.05). Estrous duration was shorter in the eCG group compared to EB (37.3±2.2 h vs 50.3±2.4 h; P=0.008). Among goats showing estrus and inseminated, ovulation rates and fertility at parturition did not differ between treatments (83.3% vs 92.9%; 58.3% vs 28.6%; P>0.05 in eCG and EB groups, respectively). In conclusion, short-term progestagen protocols combined with eCG or EB effectively induce estrus in seasonally anestrous dairy goats, but fertility outcomes require optimization.
