Resumo

This study examined the effect of salinity, alone or combined with salicylic acid (SA), on the germination of seeds of a plant species: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum var. Saint Pierre). The seeds were subjected to six treatments, including four combining NaCl with salicylic acid at two concentrations (0.25 Mm and 0.5 Mm), in comparison with a control (Blida tap water).

The results highlight notable differences in terms of physiological and biochemical response to saline stress and hormonal treatment.

Overall, salinity induces a slowdown in the germination process. However, exogenous application of salicylic acid mitigated the negative effects of saline stress, particularly at the concentration of 0.25 Mm, achieving final germination rates of 82.5%.

The first significant differences appear on day D5, marking the beginning of germination activity under the effect of the different media. However, treatment T5 (medium based on Na2SO4 + aslicylic acid at 0.25 m Mole) records the lowest germination value, (12.45) reflecting a delay or irregularity in the germination process.

These results suggest that salicylic acid improves seed tolerance to salt stress, particularly by reducing salt-induced germination delay. In conclusion, salinity partially inhibits germination of the tested species, not by a loss of viability, but mainly by a slowing down of the germination process. The addition of salicylic acid would limit this deleterious effect and improve germination performance in saline conditions.
