Resumo

Habronemiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Habronema muscae, Habronema microstoma, and Draschia megastoma, which are gastric nematode worms of the Habronematidae family. Equids are the primary hosts affected by this disease, and clinical manifestations of this parasitosis can be cutaneous, gastric, ocular, conjunctival, pulmonary, or cerebral. The parasite’s life cycle depends on insect vectors, such as the housefly (Musca domestica) and the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans), to persist in the environment and reach the definitive host. Cutaneous habronemiasis is generally more severe, causing wounds characterized by granulomatous inflammation with necrotic and ulcerative foci, commonly located on the distal regions of the limbs, prepuce, medial corner of the eyes, or lip commissure, which are difficult to heal. Avermectins are the most recommended anthelmintics for this parasitosis; however, used on their own, they are ineffective for the treatment of cutaneous habronemiasis. The association of corticosteroids and other topical drugs with larvicidal and healing action is necessary. Phototherapy is a light-based treatment widely used in veterinary medicine for wound healing due to its anti-inflammatory benefits, cellular activation, and proliferation, which stimulate tissue revitalization. It is a low-cost, non-invasive electromedical device that can be associated with conventional treatment protocols and is also accessible to equine veterinarians working in the field. This case report presents an equine treated with phototherapy for the healing of a wound caused by cutaneous habronemiasis, aiming to demonstrate the use of this photonic therapy as an adjunct treatment in this pathology.
