Resumo

Damping off of soybean, caused by Pythium spp., is favored by cool temperatures and wet soil conditions. The goal of this research was to determine the effect of three temperatures on growth and pathogen aggressiveness of three different species of Pythium (s.l.) associated with soybean in the Buenos Aires province. A total of 12 isolates of the most prevalent Pythium spp. in Buenos Aires were screened.  Daily growth rate in culture medium was measured and seed and seedling assays were performed. Seed and seedling assays were used to quantify the aggressiveness of Globisporangium ultimum, G. irregulare and P. aphanidermatum on soybean at 15, 25, and 35°C. G. ultimum was more aggressive at 15°C compared with 25 and 35°C. Conversely, P. aphanidermatum was more aggressive at 35°C than at 15 and 25°C. Our data showed that aggressiveness of some species of Pythium on soybean was influenced by temperature, which suggests that future studies evaluating pathogenicity of this pathogen should be performed at more than one temperature.
