Resumo

Earthworms are suggested as bio-indicators of biodiversity and soil quality. This work aims to evaluate the combined and individual environmental impact of cadmium nitrates (Cd-NO2) and mercuric chloride (HgCl2) on an invertebrate of the worm family (Aporrectodea trapezoides) commonly used as a biological model for toxicological studies. Here, earthworms were treated with three increasing concentrations of the two metals (1500, 2000, 2500 ppm /500g soil) for 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours, and hence, the animals’ growth was monitored over 14 days for the mortality assessment. Results showed that the weight growth of A. trapezoids treated with cadmium and/or mercuric chloride significantly reduced during all treatment periods. Based on the mortality results, mercuric chloride is more toxic than the Cd-NO2 and HgCl2 in combination and Cd-NO2 alone on A. trapezoides. Moreover, HgCl2 caused serious morphological abnormalities in the treated earthworms, showing coiling of the body, loss of pigmentation, cut of the posterior part, lesions, or bloody wounds alone.
