Precipitation (P) is used primarily to approximate soil moisture in a watershed. In the present paper, relation between antecedent precipitation index (API), evaporation and soil water content is studied. The main purpose is to study the role of the Antecedent Precipitation Index on runoff (shape of the hydrograph) in the semi-arid catchment of Arib Ebda located in northwestern Algeria, an area of 269 km2 and 77% low permeability. For the case study, we have plotted hydrographs of the max flow in time Qmax = f (t) and hyetograms rainfall in time P = f (t), calculated runoff, asymmetry and flattening runoff coefficients. We studied the relationship between different hydrological variables (API5days – rainfall (P) -max flow (Qmax) – runoff depth (Lr) –runoff coefficient (Kr) using principal component analysis (PCA). The results of this analysis indicate that there is a good relationship between the API5days and the max flow, and a strong relationship between the max flow and the rainfall, as well as between the rainfall and the runoff depth (Lr). Finally, we have established a total rainfall - runoff diagram based on the runoff coefficient.
