In the arid region of Beni Abbes, southwestern Algeria, agriculture faces significant challenges due to climatic risks, severely impacting productivity and the quality of life of local communities. This study delves into the influences of social and technological factors on agricultural practices in this region. By utilizing a structured questionnaire distributed among local farmers, the research employs advanced multivariate statistical methods, specifically Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), to classify agricultural practices into four distinct types.
The first category focuses on farmer demographics, aiming to identify those who play a critical role in local agriculture, including their experience, education, and access to resources. The second category emphasizes the quality of agricultural methods, with particular attention to the types of irrigation technologies employed, such as drip irrigation or traditional surface techniques. This categorization highlights the diverse approaches farmers utilize to adapt to water scarcity and harsh conditions.
By mapping these categories, the study offers insights into the complex interplay between economic, social, and technological aspects of desert agriculture. The findings underline how these elements collectively influence the resilience and productivity of farming systems in Beni Abbes, providing a valuable framework for targeted agricultural interventions in similar arid environments.
