The main objective of the present work was to analyze the causes of success and management with Neotropical otter cubs born in captivity between 2016 and 2022 in the Otter Project of the Ekko Brasil Institute (IEB), Santa Catarina Island, south of Brazil. The successful birth of Lontra longicaudis, without human intervention, is without precedent. Few studies on the species have been carried out in captivity. The data analyzed were obtained from the IEB database. Between 2016 and 2022, fifteen births were registered, two in 2016, three in 2017, two in 2018, two in 2019, three in 2021, and three in 2022. Out of these, nine individuals reached adulthood, or 60% of the total number of births in captivity. Unsuccessful births account for 27% of the total. Since 2017, trap cameras were installed in the shelters of the enclosures to monitor the cubs and the maternal behavior of the females. These actions, combined with non-human interference for 30 days after birth, resulted in the highest survival rate offspring survival.
