Abstract

The aim of this work was to evaluate the adsorption of Cr (VI) in simulated effluent, using fly ash from the coal gasification (G-CFA) as an adsorbent. Isotherm models were used to evaluate the thermodynamic parameters, and the kinetic behavior was determined in a batch study. The equilibrium isotherms indicated that the adsorbent has several available sites for adsorption and that the equilibrium data were well fitted by the Sips isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 7.45 mg.g-1 and the adsorption thermodynamic estimation indicates that the Cr (VI) adsorption process is spontaneous and favorable. The kinetic equation of Elovich was able to describe the rate of adsorption of ions Cr (IV) on fly ashes due the heterogeneity of the surface. To evaluate the rate-limiting step for the overall adsorption process the Weber and Morris's theory was tested. The results showed that the mechanism of the adsorption of Cr (VI) was described by the external surface diffusion in the mesopores and intra particle diffusion in the micropores.
