The São Bonifácio chapel, built in the 1940, was the first religious temple in the city of Maringá. The construction technique, entirely in wood, with double walls, differs from the other wooden religious buildings in the region, which gives it great particularity and historical heritage value. Despite its undeniable value for the city's cultural patrimonial, the building has suffered with the action of time, with no periodic conservation measures that guarantee its preservation. This study aimed to evaluate the building through visual analysis, with the objective of proposing preventive conservation measures. The methodology was carried out through on-site visits, photographic surveys and visual analysis, when the existing changes and deteriorations were registered. A table of damages with the respective causes and a graphic mapping was carried out, carried out by means of technical drawings, showing the state of conservation and the diagnosis of the building. The results obtained demonstrate the presence of physical and biological deterioration, with emphasis on the rotting of the wooden pieces, caused by humidity and the presence of xylophagous insects in the roof structure. It was concluded that the serious damages are occasional, it is recommended the frequent maintenance of all the wooden elements, in order to block the causes of deterioration, in addition to the more detailed verification of the non-visible areas. The analyzes performed are based on a simplified method and are of low cost, favoring preventive conservation actions in the building. They are of relevance and must be applied in restoration projects, helping to preserve the architecture of the wood and the effective conservation of the testimony of the technique and history.
