Posterior capsule rupture related to cataract surgery at an ophthalmology hospital in southern Brazil

Posterior capsule rupture is one of the most common complications in modern cataract surgeries and can lead to significant visual impairment. This study aimed to estimate the occurrence of posterior capsule rupture related to phacoemulsification in an ophthalmology hospital in Western Paraná. This is a retrospective and analytical study based on the review of medical records of patients aged over 18 years who underwent phacoemulsification between January 2016 and June 2023. Among 25,546 patients who underwent the procedure, 1.10% experienced posterior capsule rupture, of which 50.71% were men, and 64.89% were aged between 60 and 79 years. There was a significant association between age and sex, with higher risk observed in men and younger individuals (18–39 years). Patients with diabetes and hypertension also showed a significant association. Traumatic cataracts presented the highest likelihood of this complication among cataract types. Identifying risk factors for this complication can aid in implementing preventive strategies to improve surgical outcomes.
