Abstract

Considering that functional impairment after admission to Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) may interfere with child development, it is important to describe the functional outcomes of critically ill children. The objective was to describe the clinical profile and functional evolution of patients admitted to a PICU. A cohort study was conducted in a PICU between June 2022 and June 2023, including patients aged <18 years and length of stay ≥72 hours. Functionality was assessed using the Pediatric Functional Status Scale (FSS-p), in which higher scores indicate worse functionality, at baseline (considered 15 days prior to admission), PICU admission, and discharge. Descriptive analysis of the study variables was performed, including measures of central tendency and dispersion, as well as absolute and relative frequencies. Thus, 112 patients were included, with a median age of 1.5 years, predominantly infants, with previous comorbidities; 45.5% were admitted due to respiratory disorders and required invasive ventilation. At baseline, 56.2% presented adequate functionality, decreasing to 16% at admission. At discharge, most patients remained with some degree of dysfunction, with moderate dysfunction (28.6%) being the most frequent. Median FSS-p scores varied from 6.5 (adequate functionality) at baseline to 13.5 (moderate dysfunction) at admission and 9 (mild dysfunction) at discharge. Functional worsening was observed in 25.9% of patients at PICU discharge, allowing the conclusion that patients admitted to the PICU presented functional decline during hospitalization, with persistence of functional deficits in part of the sample after discharge from the unit.
