Clinical laboratories perform an important function in defining the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and need to guarantee the reliability of their processes. When the labs also perform the functions of teaching and scientific research with access to the various types of users, safety and establishment of strict programs by these organizations are crucial. This study aims to implement and preliminarily evaluate a 5S System quality tool in the Brazilian clinical laboratory university, used by health professionals, students in biomedical sciences and scientific researchers. The implementation of this tool occurred through planning using the 5W2H method. Two internal auditors using a checklist to establish the total score for each sense over two semesters carried out the evaluation. The results were compared in percentages and using the Six Sigma metric. During the implementation of the Standardization stage, it was possible to observe the following benefits provided to all sections through the application of the three previous senses: better organization, safety, and more visual and spacious environments, which could promote an improvement in the teaching and learning process of the laboratory. The evaluation by internal auditing using checklists allowed improved harmonization and safety of work conditions. Therefore, the implementation of the 5S System brought significant benefits to the university laboratory, consolidating the initial bases for the implementation of a quality management system.
