Abstract

Juvenile Hyaline Fibromatosis Syndrome (JHFS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease that is characterized by the deposition of an amorphous hyaline substance in the most diverse organs, as in gingival tissue. Gingival fibromatosis as a result of the syndrome is not a self-correcting complication and surgical removal of this tissue is the most indicated treatment. The objective of this study is to report the results of a surgical gingival treatment of a patient with JHFS using a high-power laser. A 23-year-old female patient was diagnosed with JHFS, in need of gingival surgical removal, that caused difficulties in chewing, cleaning and with aesthetic compromise. The clinical and radiographic examination confirmed a generalized and fibrotic gingival growth, poor oral hygiene condition, tooth mobility and bone loss in the lower anterior teeth. Gingivectomy was performed with a high-power laser (980 nm / 2.5 W). There were no postoperative complications and the healing process occurred within normal limits. It was observed the efficiency of the use of high-power lasers for the surgical management of patients with gingival fibromatosis caused by JHFS with 10-month follow-up.
