The study aimed to use vegetable sponge (Luffa cylindrica) as a bioadsorbent to remove oil and grease content (TOG) from effluents, seeking a sustainable alternative for treating water produced by the oil industry. Batch and fixed-bed column tests were performed. Natural sponge and sponge modified with HDoutor em Engenharia QuímicaCl and NaOH were used. The natural loofah had a moisture content of 10.2%, total ash content of 7.1%, actual density of 2.12 gcm-3, ammoniacal nitrogen content of 0.35%, and the presence of O-H, N-H, and C-H functional groups that favor adsorption. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that acid and alkaline treatment modified the morphology of the fibers. In batch tests, the unmodified loofah removed 84.7% of the oil and grease content (TOG), the loofah modified with HCl removed 94.5%, and the loofah modified with NaOH removed 73.8%. In a fixed bed, with an initial TOG concentration of 709.7 mgL-1, removals of 45.5% to 92.9% were obtained, with a kinetic constant k=0.132 min⁻¹. It is concluded that vegetable loofah is a promising natural, renewable, and efficient adsorbent for reducing TOG in effluents.
