Introduction: Amebiasis is a globally relevant parasitic disease with significant impact in developing countries. Its etiological agent, Entamoeba histolytica, is highly pathogenic and can cause both intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations. Although widely prevalent, most infections remain asymptomatic, which hinders early control and diagnosis. Objectives: To update the main concepts related to amebiasis, including: biology of the parasite, pathophysiology, diagnosis, clinical management, and prevention strategies. Methodology: Narrative literature review based on recent scientific articles published in databases such as PubMed, SciELO, and reference literature in medical parasitology. Discussion: Amebiasis remains one of the leading lethal parasitic diseases, especially in settings with poor sanitation. Transmission through contaminated water and food, clinical variability, and high morbidity in invasive cases reinforce the need for preventive measures. Furthermore, the importance of professional training for differential diagnosis and appropriate treatment is emphasized, particularly in areas with limited infrastructure. Conclusion: A thorough understanding of amebiasis is essential not only for individual clinical practice but also for the planning of public health policies. Strengthening medical education and epidemiological surveillance is a key strategy to reduce the impact of this neglected disease.
