The Manchester Triage System (MTS) is a triage tool widely used in emergency departments to prioritize patients based on the severity of their condition. The system aims to ensure timely treatment for the most urgent cases while optimizing wait times. This study focused on the implementation of the MTS in Brazil, where it has proven to be an essential tool for improving emergency care. Nurses in Brazilian emergency units face the challenge of quickly assessing patients' urgency, and the MTS provides a structured approach to this task. However, nurses also rely on their clinical judgment to account for the subjective aspects of a patient’s condition. The effectiveness of the MTS was demonstrated in various studies, with significant findings indicating that the system is a reliable predictor of patient outcomes, such as hospital stay length and mortality risk. In particular, studies in Brazil and Portugal showed that patients classified as high priority (red) had a significantly higher risk of death compared to those in lower priority categories. Furthermore, research comparing the MTS with other triage systems revealed that the MTS outperformed others in predicting the need for admission to the emergency observation unit. Despite its strengths, challenges remain, including the adaptation of the system to local realities and the management of increased workload during peak times. As healthcare systems continue to evolve, it is crucial to regularly evaluate and refine the MTS to ensure it remains effective in various contexts.
